Tenuta Sant'Antonio Valpolicella Nanfre 2021

An Italian red wine with wonderful freshness, fruity aromas and soft tannins. This beautiful ruby ​​red colored wine with cherries and ripe red fruit tones and almonds is smooth in the glass and comes into its own very well served at eighteen degrees with light meat dishes and cheese.
The bottle is closed with the glass vinolock. A luxuriously beautiful way of closing instead of the cork or screw cap.
This Valpolicella is traditionally made from seventy percent corvina supplemented with rondinella. The planting density per hectare is also high for these vines: six to ten thousand per hectare.

The result after strict selection is well-structured and concentrated fruits, which after manual harvest are carefully transferred for maceration at twelve to fourteen degrees Celsius. This process passes silently into a ten-day fermentation, followed by pressing for more color and complex tannic acids.

Northeast of Verona, the four Castagnedi brothers have been processing various grapes from their 48-hectare estate into beautiful wines since 1989. Here, the very calcareous hills between the Illasi and Mezzane valleys at an altitude ranging from 120 to 320 meters above sea level form the soil for sticks of red corvinone, corvina, rondinella and cabernet sauvignon; garganega and chardonnay for white.

Initially, the family sold the harvest to the local cooperative, but by investing in the latest techniques, the Castagnedis hoped to improve the quality of their wines and make the transition to bottled wines profitable on their own domain.

For example, the number of sticks per hectare was increased while the yield was reduced. And against the Monti Garbi hill a new cellar was built at a place where groundwater can be pumped up.

In 1995 the first Tenuta Sant'Antonio wines came onto the market and the attention of the wine press, importers and consumers was almost immediately drawn. This was a winery to be reckoned with!

The first major recognition came in 2000 when the Gambero Rosso awarded the Cabernet Sauvignon Capitello 1997 with three glasses. Before that, the Chardonnay Colori d'Autunno 1996 had already scored 93 out of 100 points in Wine Spectator and there was a lot of interest in the Chardonnay IGT Scaia Bianca. It had become clear that the Castagnedi brothers were capable of making international wines. But they preferred to concentrate - convinced of the great quality - on the production of local wines.
